Do you have any artistic education? How did you find out about BJDs?
I haven’t any artistic education. I have a higher economic education. I attended art school as a child, but not for long. It seemed too boring then. For the first time I saw BJDs at one Russian-language forum called Dollplanet. And I saw that some people make BJDs on their own. It really impressed me! And I decided that I also should try to make my own doll. I have never had a BJD doll produced by any company or artist. I have never saw them in reality, never held in my hands. Now I have only one porcelain BJD by another artist.
¡Realmente me impresionó!

And how did you started sculpting dolls?
So, I started sculpting my first doll. I used clays called LaDoll and Paperclay. I also used them to create a master model until recently. Of course, my first dolls were very primitive and funny, but I still keep them carefully. It was an unforgettable feeling to hold in hands my own bjd for the first time. And I immediately began to create the next doll. And then one more and more. Then I began to study work with porcelain, acquired a kiln for firing, and continued to develop in this direction. My dolls were bought by collectors. So, an exciting hobby has become my profession. My ultimate goal was the successful sale of dolls. At that moment I needed to earn enough money for one important cause. That was a very personal reason. I never talk about it. And that was a very big incentive for me those days.
¿Y cómo comenzaste a modelar muñecas?

How would you define your aesthetics? What inspires you?
I really love beautiful people, it does not matter whether it is a man or a woman. I can stare at a person on the street for a long time. It may seem strange, I have to stop myself. I love elongated body proportions, women’s wasp-waist and men’s broad shoulders, beautiful high foreheads, jaws and chins. I never have a specific character or any thing for inspiration. It can be some kind of person, or a hero of a film or myth, for example, a picture that I saw on the Internet. Sometimes even an unusual outfit. Sometimes a general image of the future doll is formed in my head with all the details. Sometimes everything comes to me while working on a doll and I can see its final image only at the end.

Do you work with resin or porcelain? Do you have a workplace to share with us?
I work with both resin and porcelain. I love porcelain because it is the most ancient and most beautiful material I have ever seen. I would say that everything will die, but porcelain stays forever. This is incredibly difficult material to work with. You must have special knowledge and skills to work with porcelain. You must also have a special kiln for firing. Mine, for example, can work in the range up to 1300 degrees Celsius. You must be able to make plaster molds for casting porcelain clay in them. But thanks to all those things, working with porcelain fosters patience and fortitude. If something goes wrong, you have to start from the very beginning. And do it again and again until you reach the end result.
Work on one porcelain doll takes an average of 1-3 months, depending on complexity. I really like to make engraving and carving on my porcelain dolls. I like to encrust them with precious stones. Such additions make the doll truly unique. I never repeat designs for my porcelain dolls.
I also love resin. It gives great opportunities for an active game with a doll, for creating a plurality of its looks. I love to hold my resin dolls in my hands. I like to change their poses. Often I just enjoy their look. Love them. I don't cast resin dolls on my own. The casting workshop from Cheboksary, Russia helps me with this. They use resin called Task (smooth-line) and they do the great work! All my collectors are delighted with the high quality of resin and casting.
For my resin dolls, I created a master model in a 3D program and printed it on a 3D printer. It was a whole new experience for me. And I really love 3D modeling now!
In my apartment, where I live with my husband, daughter and two cute chihuahuas, there is my workshop. This is a separate room that we have equipped specifically for my work. My husband made a good dust hood for me. My desktop sometimes pops up on Instagram photos. But I never showed my entire workshop, there is too often a creative mess. I will try to fix it.
I rarely make sketches for my future work. Basically, these can be fragments of parts of the body, engravings, hairstyle or costume.

You also make wigs for your dolls, some with intricate braids! What can you share about them?
Oh, I really love making wigs. I use finest mohair, viscose hair, silk hair and braids. I make glue wigs on magnets by myself. I use fabric for hats. I know people love my wigs with braids. There is an open secret – usually I use ready-made braids for people. But there are some nuances here. Firstly, it is difficult to find micro braids that they are suitable in scale for dolls. Secondly, a braid wig takes much more time and effort than a regular wig. Because each braid needs to be prepared in a special way. But sometimes I make braids by myself. Then I feel my fingers lead for a few days.
I also love viscose hair. It is very delicate and requires reverent care. Viscose can be easily tangled and wrinkled, it must not be wet. But this hair is so light, thin, soft, weightless! Just perfect for dolls. In addition, it has a very wide color palette.
¡Oh, me encanta hacer pelucas!

You also offer stylish heels. What inspire you to make them?
3D modelling inspires me to make my heels. As I said, I discovered the 3D world just recently. It happened all of a sudden. I tried to model the articulated doll there, learned lessons on YouTube and articles on the Internet. And I did it. And then I decided to model shoes and accessories. I realized that 3D modeling opens up unlimited possibilities for design. There are some things that I could never have made manually. For example, delicate lace elements on my shoes or an abundance of tiny spikes or micro beads. In 3D I can do all these things and even more! I created master models for my shoes in a 3D program (Zbrush) and printed them on a 3D printer. And sent them to the casting workshop. Now I offer my heels in resin in three colors – white, black and red. Or in skin tone colors.
También ofreces increíbles tacones. ¿Qué te inspira a hacerlos?

Have you thought of making other sizes and lines? Have you considered male dolls?
I have received several requests for my resin dolls in the size of SD. But for this size I need a sufficient number of applicants. After all, it is a very expensive pleasure to print such a large doll on a 3D printer to be able to use it as a master model for resin. I plan some changes for my future editions. Using magnets for feet and hands, for example, some new faces and some changes for body and joints. And new shoes, of course. I don’t plan to make male dolls yet. Frankly, personally I consider the female body more beautiful and perfect than the male one. Dear men, please don't hold a grudge against me for these words ))) In addition, the male anatomy is much more complicated than the female, the structure of the skeleton and muscles are different. Of course, difficulties have never stopped me. But, no, I'm still not ready.
¿Has considerado muñecos hombres?

  1. Anna K does amazing work! The faces, the bodies and the intricate designs carved on them are so perfect it's hard to believe she has had no artistic training. I believe some of her dolls have been featured in Dolls Magazine. I remember an article a couple of years or so ago. She does beautiful work.
