Interview with Lydioteision Customs

Hello everybody! Today we have the last interview of the decade! That is quite the statement, so let's welcome Lydioteision Customs, a Spanish artists that makes great faceups. I once asked on Instagram to get input in who I should interview next, and she was recommended.

As always, the interview is in English and Spanish and all images are used with permission. Let's dive in, without further ado.

Hello! It is an honour to interview you!
Hello! First of all, thank you for the interview! It gives me the chance to reach those that know little about me and expand my frontier. I am Lydia (25 years) and the only artist of Lydia Studio, where I work since a some years ago. Something like around 2011. I’m Spanish, from Pamplona, a city in the north quite isolated from any artistic thing.
¡Hola! ¡Es un honor hacer esta entrevista contigo!
Hola!

Let’s start with a classic: how did you find BJDs?
I met BJDs after some years in the Pullip hobby. Yes, I started faceups and sculpture with Pullips. Back then, they were my great passion. They are all so similar yet so different! My artist trajectory started with this, first studying an art major, and then doing an specialization in sculpture and painting techniques. Though if I’m being honest, I truly learned alone with my own practice at home.

And so, how did you started doing faceups? And accepting commissions?
After quite some time doing faceups and mods on Pullips, people started asking me if I would offer my services. I didn’t have them, but if people were asking maybe it was time to offer them. So I adventured myself into accepting other people’s dolls, such as Blythe, Monster High or BJDs. And that is how I started dealing with them. But while Pullips were losing appeal, BJDs were gaining grounds. Not only on myself but in general. People preferred them, so they became the main ground of my work. Since the first time I saw them (I couldn’t afford them) I thought about creating one. I spent a lot of time with this idea, but it wasn’t until saving a lot that I invested to try to sculpt BJDs. I ended up having dolls by other artists, but it took me three years (since I started sculpting) in finishing my first MSD head, Eragona.
Entonces, ¿Cómo comenzaste a hacer maquillajes? ¿Y a tomar comisiones?

Among the commissions you did, do you have a personal favourite? And a most popular among followers?
Maybe it is wrong for me to say that, but my favourite faceup is the custom that I did to my Ellana, from Cerisedolls (Lillycat). I have been asked thousand times how I died the doll in blue, but it is blushing. But very well done! I am in love of this doll since I have her. And as a sculptor, I also see suitable to mention my most popular doll, Eragona. Since I first released her head, it has never worn out. I still have requests for her. And she doesn’t even has her body finished! This is my fault, I am really slow as a sculptor. It takes me so much time, I think I ask too much of myself.

Do you have any workplace? What are your favourite materials to work with?
Of course! The materials try at the end are not the healthiest. There are so many gases and vapours that it is best not to breath them. I have a room in my apartment dedicated only and only to the work. It has good ventilation and door is closed all the time, so that dust and vapours don’t extend to the house. I love watercolours! I just use watercolours and pastels. I paint everything with a brush and an airbrush. I can’t work with watercolour pencils. I ended up forging a friendship with the brush pressure and fighting to death with pencil sharpeners.
