Interview with Vitta Vera

First interview of the year is here! This time, let me introduce you to Akiko Vera, also known as Tsuminaki, a USA-based faceup artist (though she also makes tattoos and body blushing, though). As always, all photos here were used with permission, and you'll be able to read the interview in both English and Spanish.

Hello and thank you for doing the interview! Would you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! I’m Akiko Vera, or Tsuminaki (my online moniker); my BJD related services all fall under the name of Vitta Vera (which means ‘Stall of soul makers’ in a project language of mine). Originally from Hawaii, I lived in San Francisco for around 30 years and more recently relocated to Decatur Georgia! I love creating in all forms, but I tend to go where opportunity and circumstances take me so at present I’m keeping myself in practice sharing BJD customizations, which in lonely times keeps open an exciting connection to the world outside.
¡Hola y gracias por aceptar la entrevista! ¿Te introducirías a los lectores?
¡Hola! Soy Akiko Vera o Tsuminaki (mi nombre online).

Let’s start with the basics. How did you discover BJDs? Do you have an artistic background?
I’ve always enjoyed art; I started drawing as a young girl and was generally known as ‘the bookworm artist’ in classes or groups throughout my life. Painting, singing, dancing, writing, worldbuilding, playing the piano, composing music – all flavors of creating open me up in different ways and bring me energy and happiness. I studied art at UC Berkeley, graduating in 2002 (though honestly I wish sometimes I’d done trade school instead! I didn’t get a ton of actual technical instruction there, but I did gain lots of experience with history and conceptualizing, and glimpses of what’s possible in this world). Sometime round 2003, 2004 ish, I saw a spread of some Volks Super Dollfies in a Japanese magazine at Tower Records (that takes me back)! Enchanted, I found Volks online and realized the amazing visual and storytelling potential of these dolls. I started researching which I wanted to buy and discovered the Korean company Luts, who was working with Cerberus project (now Fairyland) at the time. Their combined aesthetic resonated even more with my own, and I started my collecting journey with them in 2005!
Siempre he disfrutado del arte.

Your face-ups have so much texture! How did you start offering face-ups commissions? Do you work with commission slots?
I was psyched to paint my own BJDs from the very beginning, but I realized that to improve at it I’d need experience, including different techniques and sculpts. So in March 2005 I offered 5 free faceups on the Den of Angels forums. I’d been making BJD clothes with my (now) mother-in-law and started to sell those around that time as well, and was really enjoying engaging with other collectors around the world – still, I was so pleasantly surprised when people were interested in my work! I started a commission faceup service soon thereafter. Since I’ve moved away from my sewing partner I’ve had to halt the clothing portion of Vitta Vera, but the painting service is busier than ever! I haven’t done limited slots in the past, just taken everyone on my waitlist in order (however many heads one person wants to send in one slot), but I might rethink that in the near future as the waitlist has gotten super long!
¡Tus maquillajes tienen mucha textura! ¿Cómo comenzaste a ofrecer comisiones?

You also do face tattoos and nail painting! How did you start? What challenges do you face here?
On my very first BJD I painted a simple face embellishment of pink flowers and was hooked – I definitely considered becoming a tattoo artist in my regular professional life, so painting tattoos on dolls is quite fun for me, and provides practice I wouldn’t otherwise get in various styles of painting. I think my first body part blushing/manicure was a request from a client – most new things I take on in BJD painting are requests from clients, who I love for trusting me to work carefully with them and do my best even when I haven’t done something before! I of course get anxious working out of my comfort zone, but each first time releases something in me where even if I’m not 100 percent successful, I gain confidence and ideas for the next time.
¡También haces tatuajes y pinturas de uñas! ¿Cómo empezaste? ¿Qué desafíos has tenido?

Do you have a workplace to share with us? How do you organize to do face-ups?
I have a lovely workspace right now - it’s had five different iterations, with a little more space and materials each time, till now it’s a full studio room in my home that serves my needs wonderfully – only thing I’m missing is a spray booth! I have light and space for painting and eventually sculpting, and for my cats to join me (one is flashing his booty in the picture, next to my chair! There are a bunch of baby things in the other areas of the studio right now, so that’s about all I can show ^^). I have my painting desk (pictured), sculpting table (for future endeavors), photography area, computer area and two doll stuff and materials storage closets. I love organized and pretty spaces. I just need time to decorate more and hang all the art I’ve collected! I plan to eventually create full environments there I can show off my dolls in as well, but for now they have a nice cabinet away from the sun.
When working on faceup commissions I gather as much information as I can from the client, try to suss out the things that are most important to them and the things they don’t mind giving me freedom to decide (it doesn’t matter whether people have super specific briefs down to every detail or if they have a more laissiez-faire approach, I enjoy working with different kinds of people and needs). I formulate a vision of the outcome in my head, or sometimes make a mockup in Photoshop – I do have a $5 sketch service if clients want me to share that with them beforehand (and in a less messy form!) – I gather any references and do any research needed, and then I break down the work to achieve that vision in layers.
I usually start with some blocking and blushing with pastels, then setting down some of the linework, lashes and brows and such in paint, then more blending and refining layers, final coatings and gloss/lashes. I usually provide a pic just before final coatings in case the client has anything they might want to add. If I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to do everything, I just start with whatever steps I know and often go into a kind of trancelike state, flying to the next and the next step, once I get going! Sometimes the vision evolves while I’m working and if the client enjoys the turn in direction it’s rather exhilarating!

Do you have a personal favourite among your face-ups? And a most popular face-up?
My favorite faceups are often fantasy/artist choice faceups where the doll sculpt and/or general guidelines take me on a ride within my brain that expresses itself through my hands - or projects where I go in scared without a clear plan but end up carried by my momentum to a pleasing result (like this mask where I wasn’t exactly sure how to get the result I wanted but I just dove in and instinct took over). Or this tattoo where I had some different elements to put in but had to think carefully about how to make them harmonize, and the trance helped greatly. My more popular works generally correspond to popular sculpts or dolls with one-of-a-kind characteristics and I think my full (or partially full) doll projects tend to get some extra love too, which makes me happy because of the scope of work involved feels worth it!)

Finally, is there anything more you’ll like to share with us?
I just want to say that this work has saved me in many ways. In the lifelong fight against chronic anxiety each project accomplished is like a power up to my spirit! This work has helped me to feel useful, hone my skills and bring people happiness, it’s made me lovely and interesting friends, and it’s given me focus in times of chaos and hardship.
It’s been therapy to me when mental and circumstantial challenges have laid me low, and caused me to grow stronger and more in tune with my abstract thought processes, and able to tackle things I didn’t know I could, and it’s even afforded me helpful commercial opportunities so I can better provide for my family. It’s allowed me to carve out my own little space in the world to take root and be known and it makes me want to learn and offer more and more. I know there’s still limitless potential for growth in skill and scope, and the support and encouragement of people who enjoy my work means everything!
My waitlist is currently still closed as I continue to whittle it down, but to everyone on it I promise I’ll get to you as soon as I can and do my best for you, and for the rest, I will reopen as soon as I can and I am also allowing a few people on now if they have items specifically on my trade list on my website (to barter for partial or full payment for their project. In the meantime I’ll keep sharing what projects I’m able to on my website and my Instragram (@Tsuminaki – Instagram updates are the most frequent and I run occasional giveaways and exclusive sales on there as well)!
